I am sitting here in my living room, listening to my son cry in his crib and it is taking so much self control to not go in there and stop it. All I would need to do is pick him up, shush him and nurse him.. and he would be asleep for the night. The time for him to go to sleep has come and gone - and still he cries, making the sheet wet.. snotting all over himself... refusing sleep..
He is not hungry. He is not hurt. He does not have a wet or dirty diaper. He is just stubborn. And through his cries he is stubbornly saying that he will not rest until he is in the comfort of our arms.
I guess there isn't an easy way to teach Marc to sooth himself to sleep. Suck your thumb, boy! Hug your bear! I don't care any more, just PLEASE sleep!
Marc wants his way, and he wants it now. and he is letting us know with every cry. From his little point of view, looking up out of the crib toward the ceiling - he can't understand why we would ever want to keep ourselves from him - to comfort him and cuddle him and love on him... to be with him every moment. hmm. right now, I forget why, too!
I'm sure our neighbors are thinking, "just pick the kid up!" SUCH temptation..
I should stop Marc's crying so that our friends can sleep... because we still want to have friends.. and we still want them to be happy we have a baby.
But if we wait and do this in a few months.. a year.. a couple years.. it will only get louder! And, I mean, he can't go to college still nursing to sleep!
I need every pep talk I can get: I think we can, I think we can. Stick it out! It will be so nice when we can just put him down, say goodnight and he will go to sleep. No long, drawn out rig-a-ma-roll to get him to sleep every night.
But still, it is painful to hear. It hurts my heart.
So - since I obviously can't go to sleep while listening to these wails.. I can't help but get a little introspective (thanks
Rachel) and think about my own limited point of view. I know what I want and will wake up and tell God "
ok, here is the plan.. thanks in advance for doing it"... or "
man this is a tough time - God, please fix it right away!" But now I see from such a limited point of view... I don't know what Good God is intending for whatever we may be experiencing. Just as I only want good for my son, but he has to go through this time of learning - so our Father in Heaven refines us for our good...
And as my heart breaks listening to the cries of my son, I know that he still has to learn this lesson... that stopping his pain, his crying, would not produce the intended results. And so when I pray - I should not pray that the Lord take away whatever trial I face.. but that my heart would be ever soft to learn the lesson
quickly so that we can move on to better things!
Ohhh. no more crying! excellent!
until tomorrow, then.
